Pendants over the island are the centrepiece of most new kitchens. They need to do two things at once: light the benchtop well enough to chop and read a recipe, and look right in the room. The numbers below are the usual starting points; adjust them to your bench, ceiling and the people using it.

How many pendants?

Island bench lengthTypical choice
Up to about 1.8 mTwo medium pendants, or one large
About 1.8–2.7 mTwo large or three medium pendants
Over about 2.7 mThree or more pendants, or a linear fitting

Odd numbers often look more balanced, but two pendants suit shorter benches and symmetrical kitchens.

Spacing

  • Allow roughly 60–75 cm between the centres of medium pendants.
  • Keep the outer pendants about 15–30 cm in from the ends of the bench, measured to the edge of the shade.
  • Centre the row on the bench, not on the room; if a sink or cooktop sits in the island, centre a pendant over it or space evenly either side.

Height

Hang the bottom of the shades about 75–90 cm above the benchtop. Go higher with tall household members or wide shades that block sightlines across the kitchen, lower with small shades. The full rules, including ceiling heights, are in how high to hang a pendant light.

Size

  • As a rough guide, the combined width of the pendants should be under about two-thirds of the bench length.
  • Large shades (40 cm or more): usually two over a standard island.
  • Small shades (under 20 cm): three to five, or a cluster.

Choosing the shade for task light

  • Opaque metal or ceramic domes put the most light onto the bench.
  • Opal glass gives softer task light and glows in the room.
  • Clear glass with a decorative globe looks beautiful but can glare; use a dimmer and a frosted or lower-output globe.
  • Linear fittings spread even light along long benches and avoid a row of separate pools.

Light colour and dimming

Warm white (2700–3000 K) matches most living areas; some people prefer neutral white (around 4000 K) for a kitchen that is mainly a workspace. Keep the island pendants on their own switch and a dimmer, separate from downlights, so they can go from bright for cooking to low for dinner. See kitchen lighting ideas for how the island fits into the whole room.

Ideas

  • Matching brass domes for a classic, warm look.
  • Oversized opal globes for a soft, contemporary feel.
  • A slim linear bar for a minimal kitchen.
  • Rattan or timber shades to soften stone and stainless steel.
  • Mismatched pendants in one material and colour, hung at the same height.

In Australia, any fixed wiring, including installing a new pendant or downlight, must be done by a licensed electrician.
