Brass gives light a warm, golden reflection that no other metal quite matches. It works in heritage homes, mid-century rooms and minimal modern spaces alike. Before you buy, it helps to know what kind of brass you are looking at and how it will age.

A magnet test helps: a magnet does not stick to brass, but it will stick to a steel base under plating.

Finishes

  • Polished: mirror-bright, traditional and glamorous.
  • Brushed or satin: soft, fine-lined, contemporary; hides fingerprints.
  • Antique or aged: darkened chemically for a vintage look.
  • Unlacquered (living finish): left raw so it develops a patina over time.
  • Lacquered: sealed with a clear coat to stay bright longer.

Brass pendant lights

  • Brass domes over a kitchen island or dining table are a classic; the brass interior reflects warm light down.
  • Glass globes with brass fittings suit living rooms and entries.
  • Pair brass with black, timber, marble, deep greens and navy.
  • Spacing and heights: see kitchen island lighting; for black-and-brass combinations, black pendant lights.

Brass floor lamps

  • Arc lamps: reach over a sofa or armchair without a ceiling point; need a heavy base.
  • Tripod lamps: sculptural, with fabric shades for ambient light.
  • Task or reading lamps: adjustable heads beside a chair; the shade should sit just above shoulder height when seated.
  • Vintage and mid-century lamps: check old wiring; rewiring by a licensed electrician is wise before use.

Globes

Warm white (2700 K) flatters brass. Filament globes suit open fittings; frosted globes reduce glare. See LED light bulbs.

Caring for brass

  • Lacquered brass: dust and wipe with a soft damp cloth only. Polishes and abrasives strip the lacquer.
  • Unlacquered brass: enjoy the patina, or polish with a brass cleaner when you want it bright again.
  • Plated brass: treat gently; never use abrasive pads.
  • Turn off and let fittings cool before cleaning.

In Australia, installing or replacing a hard-wired light fitting must be done by a licensed electrician.

Questions

How can I tell if a lamp is solid brass?

Solid brass is heavy and a magnet will not stick to it; if a magnet sticks, it is plated over steel.

Does brass lighting tarnish?

Unlacquered brass darkens and develops a patina over time; lacquered brass stays bright longer.

How do you clean a brass pendant light?

Lacquered brass: dust and wipe with a damp cloth only. Unlacquered brass can be polished with a brass cleaner.
